EXETER, R.I. (AP) — A date has been announced for the election to recall four Exeter Town Council members over their proposal to change the way the town issues concealed weapons permits.
The Providence Journal reports the election has been scheduled for Dec. 14. Voters will be asked to vote yes or no to recall each of the four council members.
Residents filed petitions seeking the recall after the four council members suggested switching responsibility for issuing concealed weapons from the town clerk to the state attorney general's office.
Gun rights advocates say the council ignored concerns that the change would have made it more difficult to obtain a permit. The change was not approved by the state's legislature.
