Former High School Principal Never Taught Assigned Class, Gave Students A's

The principal at Mainland High School in Dayton Beach, Florida resigned after an investigation revealed she committed multiple ethical and policy violations during her tenure at the school. Cheryl Salerno was assigned to teach a speech class for two semesters but never did. There were nine senior athletes enrolled in the course, and she gave them all A's.

The school board also discovered that Salerno administered fake Advanced Placement tests to hundreds of freshmen at the school. Those students believed they would get college credit for taking the test. She also hired two teachers to be guidance counselors who were not certified nor qualified for the positions, and assigned teachers to teach subjects they were not certified in without notifying parents first.

Some of her actions could be violations of Florida law, but it is unknown if any charges will be filed against her.

The school board placed Salerno on paid leave, but she tendered her resignation the following day. She will still receive the retirement benefits she earned during her 30-year career.
