COVID-19 UPDATE: All RI Schools to Open August 31st

Rhode Island school children will all return to classes full time on the same day, according to a plan released on Wednesday by Governor Gina Raimondo and the RI Dept. of Education. The state goal is for school districts to begin in-person classes on August 31st. Under the plan, all districts will adopt the same statewide calendar. The last day of school is scheduled to be June 16th. Vacation weeks are planned for late December, February and April.

The governor says that the plan to open schools on August 31st follows CDC guidelines which recommend opening schools in "Phase 3," which the state expects to implement by that date. Complete details are yet to be announced, as districts will be updating their plans and submitting them to the Department of Education this summer. Among the details to be announced, will be how districts plan to implement: More cleaning, moving desks farther apart and screening for fever and symptoms.
