With Barely Time To Spare- City Council Overrides Providence Mayor Veto

The Providence City Council has voted to override Mayor Jorge Elorza’s veto of charter changes that call for an elected school committee rather than the current system of appointing them.

The vote was 11-3.

The Mayor says that an elected school board would only interject more politics in the city.

It was the only measure that the mayor really objected to.

But the charter changes were only done as a package and therefore any veto killed the entire package.

The charter questions will now go to the ballot to be voted on by residents.
