State officials are demanding a review of why a man accused of child molestation was freed on bail, despite being wanted by federal immigration authorities.
The unidentified suspect, who is a native of Guatemala was arrested in Providence last March on the felony charge, but was released and not re-arrested until earlier this month.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials recently charged that Rhode Island officials disregarded a detainer notice for the suspect.
Attorney General Peter Neronha is among those who want a review of the case by the Departments of Corrections and Public Safety.
A spokesperson for the former agency said the decision to release the suspect was that of the judge in the case.
