Merriam-Webster is unveiling its choice for word of the year.
The dictionary publisher announced Monday that "polarization" is 2024's defining word.
"Polarization" is defined by Merriam-Webster as "division into two sharply distinct opposites."
Other words that made the dictionary's words of the year list include "democracy," "pander," "weird" and "cognitive."
Recently, Collins Dictionary named "brat" word of the year while Oxford University Press selected "brain rot."
