DOT Director Alviti Grilled For Hours On Washington Bridge Project

The State Legislature conducted another oversight hearing on the problems of the Washington Bridge.

Transportation Director Peter Alviti, under oath testified that the state transportation department lacked the experts needed to deal with the long term issues generated by the bridge.

He said Rhode Island, like other states relied on consultants from construction companies for expert advise.

Former US Attorney Zachery Cunha who questioned Alviti for hours.

Cunha questioned the lack of in house experts to do inspections and provide guidance.

State Senator Sam Zurier blasted Alviti his failure to provide lawmakers with information on progress that was being made.

The new westbound side of the Washington Bridge is expected to be completed sometime in 2028.

The current cost is around 572 million dollars.
