An activist group is calling for virtual court hearings in Rhode Island due to the presence of ICE agents making courthouse arrests.
The Deportation Defense Line claims ICE agents are taking people into custody outside court buildings daily.
The group said dozens of organizations, lawyers and court employees have signed an open letter to the state Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul Suttell and Governor Dan McKee requesting virtual hearings.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley says that he was outraged by the detainment. He said that the student was doing what people hope young people will do and that is take advantage of opportunity.
He called the actions, "another cruel example" of the actions of The Trump Administration.
The Mayor is lending his name to those who are seeking an increased availability of virtual court hearings.
