Coalition Defends Critical Services For Sexual Assault, Domestic Survivors

Rhode Island's Peter Neronha and a coalition of attorneys general have secured an agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice ensuring that it will not apply unlawful restrictions on services for sexual assault and domestic violence survivors.

The coalition sued the DOJ last month, challenging a rule barring states from using Victims of Crime Act, Byrne Justice Assistance Grants and Violence Against Women Act funds to provide services to undocumented immigrants, or others who cannot prove their status.

As a result of the lawsuit, the DOJ has agreed that the challenged restriction cannot and will not be applied.

Based on the binding stipulation, the coalition is voluntarily dismissing its lawsuit.
