Providence City Council Bill Would Limit Some Rent Increases

The Providence City Council is expected to introduce an ordinance Thursday that would limit rent increases for some units in the city.

The four-percent increase would be the maximum allowed without the landlord filing a petition.

Newly constructed units would be an exception with no rent control for 15-years after the initial occupancy and owner-occupied properties would be exempt.

The ordinance would also create a rent board to review landlord petitions for larger increases and hear tenant complaints.
