Diocese of Providence Sex Abuse Report Includes Calls For Major Reforms

The newly released report on child sexual abuse in the Catholic Diocese of Providence details the alleged abuse and systemic coverup by Church officials and it calls for major reforms.

The report identifies 75 clergy members credibly accused of abusing children as far back as the 1950's and it questions Diocese policies on the handling of allegations.

The report calls for major reforms including the expanded monitoring of accused clergy and stronger internal investigations.

It also recommends greater transparency, the adoption of a survivor rights policy and expanded legal accountability for institutions.

Providence Bishop Bruce Lewandowski says the AG's report provides no new information, although the Bishop is apologizing for the actions of past priests while also declaring that current priests are good people and "holy men."

The report also urges lawmakers to expand statutes of limitations, so more victims can pursue justice.
