Rhode Island AG Closes Smithfield High School Hazing Investigation

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha has closed the investigation on antisemitic hazing at Smithfield High School.

Neronha says an agreement has been reached with the school outlining preventative and corrective actions for the district to follow and it's been approved by the school committee.

Investigators determined that the district struggled to investigate the alleged hazing and did not take the necessary steps to address potential violations of the student code of conduct.

As part of the agreement, the district will address its existing policies and provide administrators, teachers, coaches, and staff with training of the policies. In addition, students will be given age-appropriate programming to prevent antisemitic discrimination.

The district must also to develop a written protocol for best practices for ensuring victims' rights and providing support to victims.
