Roger Williams Law Professor Claims Joe Shekarchi Violated State Code

A professor at the Roger Williams University School of Law professor has filed a complaint with the Rhode Island Ethics Commission regarding former House Speaker Joe Shekarchi's application to serve on the state's Supreme Court.

Michael Yelnosky is alleging that Shekarchi violated the state's code of ethics in applying to the Judicial Nominating Commission to fill a vacancy on the Court.

Yelnosky says the immediate move from one branch of state government to another would violate the state's law that requires lawmakers to wait a year after leaving elected office to pursue a state job.

Shekarchi contends that a Supreme Court position is a constitutional office and it's not subject to the prohibition.
