Providence City Council Expected To Vote On Rent Control Veto

The Providence City Council is expected to vote tonight on whether to override Mayor Brett Smiley's veto of a rent stabilization ordinance.

The city council passed the ordinance last month to cap annual rent increases at four-percent.

The ordinance would also establish a Residential Rent Regulation Board to oversee implementation, resolve disputes, and ensure the policy is enforced fairly.

Mayor Brett Smiley says there are concerns that the ordinance lacks a clear, workable implementation plan and would shift the tax burden to single-family homeowners while driving rents higher overall.
