State Votes To Return Control Of Providence Schools To The City

The Rhode Island Council on Elementary and Secondary Education has voted to return the control of Providence Public Schools to the city.

The schools are expected to be back in local control by July 1st and there will be a community forum to discuss the change on June 3rd.

The state took control of Providence schools in 2019 after a Johns Hopkins University report documented systemic failures.

In a statement, Providence School Board President Ty'Relle Stephens says the decision represents the beginning of a new chapter for the students and families of Providence.
