It's the birthday of the late Ed Sullivan. His knack for presenting acts just as they exploded into stardom - such as Elvis Presley and The Beatles - made his show TV's most successful variety series. The pained expression, hunched shoulders, and frequent flubs made him an ideal target for comics but throughout the 1950's and '60's, but nothing signified "making it big" more than an appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show". And America was so uptight back in the day that the CBS censors forced the Stones to change the lyrics of one of their biggest hits!
