Some legendary rock vides, including Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit", have been disappearing from YouTube lately.
Apparently, the video platform is having an ongoing dispute with the performing rights organization, SESAC. They're responsible for collecting royalties and protect copyrights on behalf of songwriters and publishers. Both sides had been negotiating a new agreement, but unfortunately did not get a deal done before the current one expired this past weekend. As a result, YouTube pulled the clips.
In addition to videos from Nirvana, clips from R.E.M., Green Day, Rush, Bob Dylan and more from other music genres have disappeared. But because of various legal issues, not all those acts' videos have been removed.
A YouTube spokesperson has reported that the company is in "active conversations with SESAC" and that they hope to "reach a new deal as soon as possible.
IF THE VIDEO FOR NIRVANA'S "SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT" WERE STILL AVAILABLE ON YOUTUBE, THIS IS WHERE WE WOULD'VE POSTED IT. CHECK BACK FOR UPDATES.
