It's 94 HJY's Kevin. With the sad news of Val Kilmer's passing at the age of 65 after a long, difficult illness, I wanted to see if anyone out there loved one particular Kilmer movie as much as I did: "Top Secret" from 1984, written and directed by Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker, the comedic geniuses behind "Airplane" and "Police Squad"/"The Naked Gun," etc.
Yes, "Top Secret" was ridiculously silly, but it's one of the films that really got me into comedy. And I know Kilmer had a decades-long, stories career starring and appearing in legendary films like the original "Top Gun" and "Top Gun: Maverick," that he was freakin' BATMAN for god's sake, as well as Jim Morrison, etc. But, do yourself a favor - honor Val Kilmer's memory this weekend, perhaps, by watching "Top Secret" and remembering that Val was as good at delivering laughs as he was delivering an insult to Maverick or a "Bat Punch" to a Gotham City criminal.
True, maybe some parts and jokes in "Top Secret" my not have aged well due to today's (often over-reactionary) "PC" standards, but I miss the days when a comedy movie was atually funny and solely about punchlines and not propaganda and politics.
Rest In Peace, Val, and thanks for the movie memories!
