Mayor Smiley: No Tax Increase- More Spending For Schools, Police, Fire

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley has presented his second budget proposal to the City Council. The document amounts to less than 599 million dollars.

The mayor says no increase in property taxes is included, and the proposal will build on investments in public safety, education, housing, and climate resiliency.

“This budget outlines strategic investments in the quality-of-life issues that matter most to our community and sets the groundwork for strong, sustainable financial growth,” said Mayor Brett Smiley. “We are building on our year one milestones and continuing to prioritize investments in public safety, housing, education and climate resiliency. This is a responsible budget that more effectively and efficiently utilizes city funds to serve our community. I am looking forward to collaborating with the City Council to pass this budget.”

Among Smiley's proposals are investments for a new police and fire academy, and 133 million dollars in funding for the school system.

The Council will next examine the budget.
